Neither the folder, nor the holly!
A boot / belt / skinning knife with full tang (the metal is continuous from the tip of the knife to the end of the handle), spalted pecan handle, and real malachite cabochon set into the wood. Just like the little bumps on the F and J keys... ;-)
The 5 bright spots are brass pins, which go all the way through the handle, wood and metal, to secure the pieces together. It also has been glued with resin to prevent moisture getting in between there.
Overall about 4.5" long, nice compact size. Would almost be allowed on a plane, except it's a fixed blade knife.
I just don't get tired of looking at that spalted pecan. It's fancy like ocelots are fancy.
This kind of flies in the face of art school, but I find making functional / utilitarian objects every bit as satisfying as "fine art" which serves mostly in the role of aesthetic enhancement of the world. Maybe even more so, because I have plenty of that "too much stuff in the world" sense of things. That sense is where I get the urge to save ALL the scraps, to make things with other things, to recycle stuff, to incorporate and combine. I suppose that is even how the coloring calendar came about -- I didn't want something to JUST hang on the wall and look pretty.
I am doing another coloring calendar this year, and I am getting it printed much earlier, with an eye toward getting it out into the world much earlier. There are currently four print images ready to go into the calendar, and I am beavering away at more of them every day - as much as my hands can take!
Before the end of September, I will have a pre-order page set up, for those of you who want to put an order in and forget about it until that day the mailman drops off another year of coloring fun. Anyone who pre-orders will get a special price, and some kind of gift along with the calendar.
Overall, it will be similar in format to the 2015 calendar, but I will get a better template for the monthly calendar pages, and do everything in my power to get the price of shipping down. I think for calendars going out in the post, I will make the colored pencils or pens an optional add-on. Or see if I can't find something that has good color and is much more compact in size.
There will also be limited edition hand-colored original prints from the calendar set. Those will be made available to purchase online about the same time as the calendars. There are other kinds of handmade items that I'll be putting up for sale before too long, but they're not calendars or prints, so I will post separately about those.
Probably the lovechild of a three-toed sloth and a busy bee.
